Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) Information
The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills is taken by most Texas public school students in spring of each year during grades three through ten. The test is administered over a period of one or two weeks, depending on the choice of each individual school. Students are tested on math and reading each year. Writing tests are issued in grades four and seven. Science tests on the TAKS are given in grades five, eight, and ten. A social studies component is offered in the eighth and tenth year.
High school seniors are unable to graduate without passing exit-level TAKS tests in English language arts, social studies, math, and science. During their junior and senior years of high school, students are given five chances to pass the test. If a student is new to the Texas public education system and enrolls after January 1 of the school year in which they are otherwise eligible to graduate, they may use scores from the SAT or ACT to replace the ELA and Math TAKS. However, students are still required to pass the exit level science and social studies TAKS test before receiving a diploma.
